Recycled Models

Professors Juan Fernández, Luis Villafañe y Raquel Arrizabalaga agreed to work together to make models from scratch. First, they designed and made the mannequin statues in iron at the forge. Second, students of Volume Techniques dressed these mannequins with recycled materials from packaging waste. Last, the best ones were exhibited in the Community Center Mosquera of Valladolid.

Eco-packaging

The manner in which something is presented to the public has nowadays become an art, the art of packaging. The design of a box or wrapping in which a product is offered for sale is aimed at attracting customers. Professor Lucía Alonso has launched a sustainable challenge to her pupils asking for appealing packaging made out of recycled materials. The result is amazing and quite funny.  Take a look.

Fashion Books

What’s the best definition for fashion books? The fashion book genre is basically about popular trends in clothing, ornaments and accessories, but it is also about make-up, hairstyles,  jewelry, shoes, etc.; they even may include the history and past of the same.  In order to prepare the final fashion show  in Cyprus, students made the following books inspired mainly in indigenous people and classical antiquity.

Printed Products

Professor Rosa Rico has been working for years on silk-screen printing and teaches how to transfer illustrated motives on fabrics.  Leonardo Project fitted specially well on the scholar curriculum and it has been given pride of place in her course. We just highlight  this five items to give but one example.

E-Commerce

One of the main objectives of the Leonardo Project is to develop the entrepreneurial spirit among students. An entrepreneur is defined as one who organizes, manages and assumes the risks of a business or entreprise. This is basically means that you have a great idea and are willing to take the bold step to make it happen while considering the risks. Here are some presentations that will help you run your own business: Star Innova sponsored by El Norte de Castilla and E-Commerce by Mediterranean Management Center that our Cypriot friends want to share with us.

From Plastic bottles to Polyester Clothing

Nina Mairanger, student at the Wiener Neustadt Fashion School in Austria invited us to wacht this video about the amazing process of transforming plastic bottles into clothes. She has written the following interesting essay about this topic.

"In the UK billions of plastic bottles are thrown away every year. We are getting much better at recycling them, but did you know that they also can be turned into clothing? .

This amazing process starts at the bottle recycling center: The first stage is shredding. When you throw away your bottle you often leave a small amount of drink inside. Shredding all the bottles releases the unwanted liquids so it doesn’t affect the quality of the plastic. The shredded bottles are then wrapped in cellophane and boxed up ready to be shipped around the world. It may be rubbish to us, but to the Chinese textile Industry this plastic waste is a valuable commodity.

Recycled bottles arrive from around the world to feed the busy clothing industry. Sorting separates the clear plastic from the colored stuff. Clear plastic can be made into white clothes or material that can be dyed, so it’s extremely valuable. Most clear plastic bottles have colored lids and stickers on them but these have got to go, so the bottles head for the baths. The colored caps are made out of a different plastic, which floats.A worker can then strain them off the top. Then there’s a separate bath for the stickers, but the workers have to be careful around this one: it’s corrosive caustic soda - very bad for the skin, but very good for removing labels. After all their wimming what’s left is a pile of clear plastic shreds, but it’s rather wet.  The next step is the oven, where it’s mixed with some light colored plastics. To produce white cloth, you need some light shaded material in the mix. The plastic will spend about 10 hours in rotating drums, where it slowly dries out.

The plastic bottles are now broken down and mixed to produce the right colors but it’s very hard to we have cloths from bits and pieces, so another step is needed. The mixture is sent through a rotating screw, where it’s heated to 270°C. This melts the plastic, but to make cloth, we don’t want a big lump - we need thread. The liquid plastic is forced through a sieve and emerges on the other side as little strings, which are collected in the container below. We’ve now got thread but it isn’t strong enough to make cloth yet. First it must be combined and stretched several times while being heated  - this will bond the fibers together. Now, it’s taken ages to produce this material, but the next part of this process is to tear it apart again.  The fluff that emerges is the raw substance you need to makePolyester. However, that takes place in another factory all together, so the workers bail it up and send it on.It looks like cotton, but it is an entirely man-made substance, created from your old bottles. A machine scrapes it all into a very rough cloth which is loaded into another machine, ready to be carded. Carding is where the bonded fibers are brushed together, so they all lie in a similar direction which strengthens the material. The sheet of polyester-felt that emerges is now ready to be turned into thread. These machines will tease it out - they spin off mile after mile of pure polyester which is  collected on bobbins (Buch S. 56). And finally, we reach the point where your old plastic bottles become cloth. Like a spider at the center of its web, the loom draws in thousands of threads and weaves a new sheet of polyester.

So we’ve turned our recycled bottles into Polyester at last. Now it’s time to make some clothes. Using a roll of material stylists mark out the latest designs being as economical as they can with their handy templates.

Although they are profiting from your rubbish, they don’t want to create any more waste. The pieces will then be sent to workers who turn your trash into the trendiest gear you can find on the high-street. So what started out as your rubbish was carefully sorted, then shredded and turned into cloth. That cloth was shredded into fluff, spun into thread and turned into fashion - from plastic bottles to Polyester clothing".

It was de D-day. The fashion show introductory speech summarizes perfectly why...

Fue el día-D. El discurso inaugural resume bien por qué...

"We welcome you all here tonight. Your presence honors our attempt to present our creations.

The fa you are about to see is the final result of the European educational partnership project Leonardo da Vinci, in which project participate: Larnaca Technical School of Cyprus, Derby College of United Kingdom, Fashion College of Wiener Neustadt of Austria and the College of Art and art restoration of Vallodolid of Spain.

The theme of our Leonardo project, “Fashion with traditional aspects”, with reference to eco-fashion and the creation of modern garments using recycled materials and vintage garments, was a challenge at times when the economic and environmental are running a crisis.

The first visit was organized at Derby in United Kingdom in November 2013.

The second visit at Wiener Neustadt in Austria in May 2014.

The third visit took place at Valladolid in Spain in September 2014.

During these visits, students and teachers had the opportunity to acquire knowledge and skills through visits, seminars and workshops, thus broadening their horizons, their visions and their ambitions.

We thank you and we continue with the fashion show we have promised.

We wish you all a pleasant evening.

Larnaca Fashion Show

Technical School of Larnaca catwalk hosted the final two-year work of the fashion schools participating in the Leonardo da Vinci Project, "FASHION WITH TRADITIONAL ASPECTS". Students from Wiener Neustadt, Derby, Larnaca and Valladolid have both designed and shown outfits inspired by ecofashion. For more than one hour, four different student collections (Greek, folk, Lefkara, indigenous) have been admired by teachers, authorities, general public and professionals. All of them included dresses, blouses and pants made with eco-friendly material and paired with recycled accessories. The whole fashion show was broadcast online through the Larnaca Technical School webpage, so that it could be seen abroad. Wonderful experience and perfect culmination of the project.

Talks between the Major of Riofrío de Aliste in Zamora and Professor Rosa Rico have resulted in a very interesting activity.
2nd year Ilustration students and have done research on the Carochos tradition in Riofrío de Aliste in order to design calendars with their images. But, what is a carocho? Its current name comes from the carocha (mask), with which some of the participants wear to cover their faces. These odd characters, dressed with strange clothes, meet in the square of the village and the festivity starts: the blind carocho dies, the molacillo calls for a priest, the gitana is transformed, the filandorra throws ashes at everybody...

One of the objectives of our Leonardo Project is to rediscover old traditions and to learn more about folk costumes from the past centuries. We will be delighted to share these carochos calendars with the Zamora Regional House and to keep looking for more traditions.

Leonardo Exhibit

This is the result of two-year work on ecofashion by Illustration, Sculpture, Interior Design and High school students and professors. They have produced hundreds of materials in the frame of Leonardo da Vinci Project "Fashion With Traditional Aspects" which the school wishes now to show in this exhibit.  We have mainly focused on the idea of sustainable fashion: recovery and recycling provide important environmental benefits such as reduces pressure on resources and results in less pollution and energy savings. Key words have been rediscovering traditional techniques and developing new ones by reusing textiles and recycled material. More information in "El Norte de Castilla" newspaper 27 April 2015. Thank you to all the participants.
